Dr. Mirel Birlan, nominated for the “Grigore Moisil” Award for Exact Sciences at the MLNR Gala

On Saturday, June 22, 2025, the 12th edition of the MLNR Awards Gala took place at the Romanian Athenaeum, during which the Director of the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy, Dr. Mirel Bîrlan, was nominated for the “Grigore Moisil” Award for Exact Sciences. The nomination represented a recognition of Dr. Bîrlan’s contributions to the field of astrophysics, particularly for his advanced studies on the dynamics of asteroids and comets - an essential area for understanding the evolution of the Solar System and for future explorations. At this edition, the “Grigore Moisil” Award for Exact Sciences was granted to Professor Lucian Beznea, a researcher at the “Simion Stoilow” Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy.

The event, organized by the National Grand Lodge of Romania in partnership with the Romanian Academy and several higher education institutions from across the country, celebrated excellence in research, education, culture, and applied sciences. Dr. Mirel Bîrlan’s nomination confirms the position of astronomy among the leading scientific fields of Romania in the world, highlighting his important role in advancing international research in this domain.
