Moon Day 2025 at the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy

On July 20, 2025, on the occasion of Moon Day, the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy once again served as an interface between the public, science and cultural heritage. The event coincided with the Annual Meeting of the Order of Architects, also held in the Institute’s park, which attracted a large number of visitors.

In this context, the “Dimitrie Leonida” National Technical Museum exhibited, within the premises of the Astronomical Institute, an original astronaut suit, received by Romania as a symbolic gift from the United States in recognition of the country’s interest in space exploration. A rare, authentic piece rich in significance, the suit fascinated visitors of all ages and provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the past and future of Romania’s involvement in the space sector. As part of the Moon Day 2025 event, guided tours were organized within the Astronomical Institute, demonstrations of the use of research infrastructure were held, and several presentations took place in the Planetarium Hall.

Moon Day 2025 offered more than just a simple anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. It was a moment of reconnection between Romania’s scientific heritage in the field of astronomy and the general public. This is an indicator showing that places like the scientific and educational park of the Astronomical Institute can become open cultural spaces, where science, history, and society can engage in dialogue.

By celebrating “a giant leap for mankind” in a Bucharest that is in a constant struggle to preserve and enhance its identity-based heritage, Moon Day 2025 reaffirmed the socio-cultural role of the Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy in the urban landscape.
