On September 7, 2025, the second total lunar eclipse of the year will take place, visible from Romania as well. The event appears to occur at a rather favorable time meteorologically, so we can prepare for observations wherever we are, provided the sky is clear. Eclipses of this kind are astronomical phenomena in which the eclipsed object (the Moon) enters Earth’s umbral shadow, the latter positioning itself between the Sun and the Moon.
The previous eclipse of this kind this year took place on the night of March 13–14, except that during that eclipse the totality phase was not visible from Romania, since the Moon was setting right in the middle of the event. Unlike the March eclipse, the current one is (almost) entirely visible from Romania. We say “almost” because the eclipse will begin at 18:08, while the Moon rises at 19:40. Totality begins at 20:25, reaches its maximum at 21:00, and ends at 21:35. During totality, the Moon’s color darkens and takes on a spectacular reddish hue, caused by sunlight that still reaches the Moon through Earth’s atmosphere.
Given the above times (valid for Bucharest), the Moon will rise already partially eclipsed. To observe this spectacular phenomenon in ideal conditions, find a location with an unobstructed horizon to the east so you can capture the celestial show as fully as possible.
This eclipse will be visible from most of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, but it will not be visible from the Americas (where the Moon will not be in the sky at that time).
